ISRAEL WAR DIARY: 17 MAY 2026

Fighting the Insane Enemies of Humanity

Israel is on high alert for the resumption of the war in Iran, with Israeli commentators giving it a fifty-fifty chance after Trump posted himself on social media on a ship with the words: “The calm before the storm.” In a recent Fox News interview, Trump said that several times in negotiations, Iran agreed to all the U.S. demands only to back out the next day. “There is something wrong with them. They are crazy. Which is why they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” Trump concludes.

Iran’s demands to end the war include:

  • ending the war on all fronts, especially in Lebanon;
  • lifting the sanctions against Iran;
  • releasing the frozen Iranian funds;
  • compensation for damages caused by the war (!!);
  • recognition of Iran’s sovereign right over the Strait of Hormuz.

Ain’t happening. They are delusional.

We are reading that American Air Force planes are once again in the skies of the Mideast in similar formation to the beginning of the war against Iran. A resumption of bombing of Iran is the best and only American response to these non-negotiable demands. According to President Trump, the U.S. knows exactly what the IRGC has been doing during the cease-fire, what rockets they’ve unburied, what bridges they’ve rebuilt. “We will undo it all in one day,” he promises.

But I am also hearing that the continuation of the war is being considered in light of the U.S. hosting the FIFA World Cup in June together with Mexico and Canada! Can that really be a factor in this decision? Keeping a nuclear bomb out of the hands of maniacs is being weighed against the well-being of a soccer tournament?

We in Israel are hoping that America finally comes to its senses and uses its full fire power for the good of the people of Iran, Israel, and the entire world. Enough pussy-footing around with these deranged lunatics. No sport is worth that. Even the World Cup.

We measure the progress of our own ongoing war by who among the many murderous jihadis have been eliminated, and which of our precious sons have been killed. There is no equivalence. We kill the worst of the worst, planners and executers of the October 7 massacre, savage murderers of our women and children. Israel has killed all four commanders of Hamas’ military wing: Salah Shehadeh, Mohammad Deif, Mohammad Sinwar, and yesterday, the final one: Izz al-Din al-Haddad.

Al-Haddad was a chief architect of October 7, and together with his family – also eliminated – held and tortured Israeli hostages. Israeli hostages. There is even a video of Haddad and his wife practicing grenade throwing!

Someone suggested we not allow Hamas to hold funerals for these monsters, but instead confiscate their remains, incinerate them, and film flushing them down the toilet. Someone else suggested we target the funerals and all who attend. Something to think about.

At this terrorist’s funeral the following “eulogy” was given: “Even if they crush our skulls and even if they tear out our hearts, we will not give up our weapons! This is our commitment to Izz al-Din al-Haddad.” So much for the second half of the Trump plan for Gaza involving disarming Hamas. Israel will have to kill them all to get their weapons. I’m in favor. After all, if that’s what they say they want…

What will Hamas do now with all the leaders of its military wing dead? When asked this by Al-Jazeera, senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan hesitated then rambled incoherently about how this shows Hamas is close to the people. Say what?!! Whoever gets to be the replacement will soon be close to his predecessors six feet under.

In the meantime, Israel is in control of 60 percent of the Gaza Strip and each day those yellow blocks are pushed forward, creating new border lines that Gazans cannot cross, and leaving them with smaller and smaller arenas in which to exercise their murderous ambitions.

Interestingly, Hamas is facing growing opposition among Gazans themselves. As reported by the Jerusalem Post, a Gazan civilian who lost his family in the war filed a landmark 40-page submission to the International Criminal Court (ICC), marking the first case brought by a Palestinian against Hamas. The lawsuit demands an investigation into 14 top Hamas leaders for war crimes, including utilizing civilians as human shields. Those leaders he indicts include Khaled Mashaal, Khalil al-Hayya, and Mahmoud al-Zahar, whom he accuses of war crimes and crimes against humanity, specifically the use of Palestinian civilians as human shields, murder, extermination, torture, and the conscription of children. The filing was spearheaded by a team of international lawyers, including former U.S. Justice Department war crimes prosecutor Eli Rosenbaum, American attorney Elliot Malin, and French attorney Sarah Scialom. The goal is to force the ICC to formally investigate these crimes against Palestinians and issue arrest warrants for the designated Hamas officials. I can’t see that antisemitic bunch of hypocrites going after Hamas. But this is an interesting situation I’ll be following.

Israel in now concentrating on disarming Lebanese Hezbollah terrorists, issuing more and more evacuation notices to Hezbollah-friendly villages on Israel’s border. According to Abu Ali, “over the weekend, the IDF struck about 100 targets in various areas in Southern Lebanon.” Forces from the Egoz Unit and the Golani Reconnaissance Battalion crossed the Litani in recent days, gaining control of territory north of the Litani – an area from which many rockets were launched toward Israel and where many Hezbollah fighters were present.

During the capture of the area, 8 soldiers were wounded, some in face-to-face combat with Hezbollah fighters. The ability to cross the Litani with armored vehicles has been achieved. We wish the wounded heroes a speedy recovery.

We all mourn the heavy price we are paying for these military achievements. Sgt. Major Israel Recanati, 24, fell in combat in southern Lebanon. Again, an explosive drone was responsible. Another fallen hero was Staff Sergeant Negev Dagan, 20, from Dekel. May their memories be a blessing.

Israel is turning the shuttered headquarters of the Hamas-supporting UNRWA Agency in Jerusalem into an IDF museum. What a terrific idea! In addition, the site will host an IDF recruitment center and a bureau for the Ministry of Defense. Finally, the place is doing some good in the world.

Maybe to distract myself from the wars in progress and on the horizon, I am finding myself obsessively following the election campaign for the next mayor of the Los Angeles. With the entrance of the unlikely candidate of former reality show star Spencer Pratt, whose Pacific Palisades house burnt to the ground in the wildfire, the entire campaign has turned into a riveting match between incompetent, corrupt, ultra-woke, Communist-leaning Democrats and the average, beleaguered Los Angeles citizen who has seen his taxes wasted, his home burned down, his once beautiful city turned into a morass of homeless drug addicts who live on the streets, defecating, shooting-up and endangering the health and the safety of the entire city. Current Mayor Karen Bass, a former groupie of Fidel Castro, who was in Ghana when her city was burning down, has been outed for her breathtaking incompetence and indifference. In a debate, Pratt wiped the floor with her. Tellingly, there wasn’t another debate. Entertaining AI videos showing Pratt as the city’s savior, and Karen Bass and Gavin Newsom as Dark Knight-like villains, ends with people throwing tomatoes at Bass and Newsom. This has gone viral, with many identifying with the tomato-throwers.

If I could vote for Pratt, I would. It’s Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, an outraged citizen finally standing up to the corrupt powers destroying his life and his country. Since in Woke California it’s against the law to demand voter I.D., I could very well vote for Pratt. As could anyone else in America. Given the outrage Pratt has triggered against woke Democrats, people who live closer to Los Angeles than I do might just hop over and do so. I am so hoping he wins. His enemies, are my enemies too.

    Dear Naomi –Another excellent column. I share your pleasure that the shuttered UNRWA headquarters are being turned into an IDF Museum. Please let us supporters know where and how to contribute to this beautiful turnaround.
    The second piece of good news has maybe even further reaching affects……a Palestinian Gazan civilian filed a lawsuit against Hamas for war crimes. I pray that this glimmer of light for standing up against the barbarians will grow and expand.
    Once the first person has spoken up, it is easier for the second, even easier for the third etc. Soon–I hope there will be way to many to ignore.

    Hi Naomi. I have been reading your updates for quite awhile ago and appreciate your insights.

    I do need to correct something about California. The main way people vote here is by mail. Vote by mail ballots are sent out to REGISTERED VOTERS ONLY. Your ballot is tracked electronically, with alerts when it is mailed to you, when you return it (either by mail or in a secured dropoff location), and when it is tabulated. If you don’t want to vote by mail, you can go into a polling place and ask to vote there. However, if your name is not on the registered list, you can’t vote. I guess someone could go in and say they’re me and try to vote in my place. But you’d need to know my specific address and my local polling place to show up in the correct place. That doesn’t seem to happen very often, if at all. If I’ve already voted by mail, my vote is locked and no one else could vote in my name.

    As far as the candidates for LA mayor and CA governor, we have a wealth of choices and none of them are great. The question is who is the least evil rather than the best candidate. Not a great situation. But since my daughter and I will be making aliyah later this year, we will be more concerned with Israeli elections than this one.

    Thanks for your great updates!

      As a bonus, I appreciate the information about California voting.

    Naomi, Trump is what we say in Texas
    “All Hat and No Cattle”.
    For those of you who are not from Texas,
    it means “All Talk and No Action”.
    The guy is busy shining Putin boots,
    and now the Chinese leader’s boots.
    I will be surprised if he did not surrender
    Taiwan to the Chinese.
    He is vulgar and corrupt to no end
    He spends our money like a drunken sailor.
    G-D help us if we have to depend on him.
    I pray for you America, and I pray for you Israel.
