More and more the goings on in Israel resemble the undeclared war of a “deep state” against a democratically elected government, something with which Americans are only too familiar . When the “people’s choice” doesn’t suit elites in either country, the solution seems to be the same.
The use of the judiciary to cripple Trump mirrors the trials of Netanyahu, who is being forced to miss vital cabinet meetings during an existential war to testify against such ludicrous charges as having accepted cigars from someone! If there is any justice at all in Israel’s judicial system, none of the charges will stand, and yet the stress they put on our leader when he is fighting for our lives is simply unconscionable.
And then there is the deeply disturbing discovery that the highly controversial head of Israel’s Shin-Bet (Israel’s equivalent to the FBI), Ronen Bar, who most of us hold responsible for the debacle on October 7, has been busy making a case to prosecute not our enemies, but our fellow Israelis, the much maligned religious “settlers” that have been in the crosshairs of the Leftist elites for decades. A document leaked to journalist Amit Segal signed by Bar states: “Generally speaking, we have identified the spread of Kahanism into law enforcement institutions as a dangerous phenomenon, whose prevention is part of Shin Bet’s mission. In light of the involvement of individuals from the political echelon, this should be done intelligently and cautiously. We must continue to collect evidence and testimonies as to the political echelon’s involvement in the activities of the security one, with respect to exercising forces illegally, and come up with several findings.”
“Come up with?” Like in manufacture? Does that sound similar to a “Russian collusion” fake news to you? The main target is Itamar Ben Gvir, who is the very right-wing Minister of Internal Security. Okay, he is a loudmouth and a bit of an idiot. But everything he has been saying turns out to be true. They are actually out to get him. I also agree with Ben Gvir’s statement that the punishment for Gazan Nukba murderers should be the death penalty, although not necessarily as he suggests the electric chair. I want to see them hang and be cremated, then flushed. The 70 virgins waiting for them in the sewers will be delighted.
At this crucial time in our beloved country’s life, when we are surrounded by enemies, we do not need this internal strife. I am sure Americans can appreciate what it is to have to fight off the agenda of failed political opponents who are willing to do almost anything to hang on to power, no matter how it hurts the country and their fellow citizens. I am personally astonished at the Democratic Party going so far as to demand the return of deported illegal immigrant gang members and proven wife beaters deported to the country in which they actually do hold legal citizenship. If every deportation is going to be examined with a magnifying glass, one wonders why the same care wasn’t used at the border before allowing these peopole to enter?
Why am I telling you all this? Because it is one more burden we have to deal with, and with which we are fast losing patience. The government we did elect seems stymied, incapable of getting rid of Bar,and the wicked attorney general Baharav Miara, who instead of supporting the Prime Minister who appointed her, especially at this difficult time, has done just the oppposite. She too is now a hero of my Leftist neighbors.
Leftist groups, whose only solution to the hostage problem seems to be total surrender to Hamas, keep gathering signatures to undermine our sacrifice and our resolve to achieve a hard won but vitally necessary victory. The latest was deeply disturbing missive purportedly signed by 900 or so pilots demanding surrender and threatening not to show up. A closer examination of the actual names showed almost none of them were pilots, and almost all were retired, and many had never even been in the airforce at all! In response, journalist Amit Segal wrote a letter and asked for signatures of people willing to show up whenever they were called, no matter what. That got 30,000 signatures in about a day. So, so much for protest letters.
The good news is that after years of pretense and expensive PR campaigns and organized protests, the real issues at stake are suddenly being revealed. It’s a relief to finally see just what has been behind all these noisy protests and flag waving and drum beating over the past few years, the corruption, venality, and power grab behind the virtue signalling of the well-organized and financed “save democracy” crowd. Now that we are all wiser, perhaps we can finally put an end to it.
With all of this going on, it is remarkable just how resilient the Jewish people in the land of Israel are. Despite the sirens going off for the Houthi barrages, Israelis had a lovely Passover. I myself spent it with my growing family, cuddling my great-grandchildren and watching the large gatherings of similar “tribes” in Tel Aviv’s Ganei Yehoshua Park, people fanning their barbeques and chasing after their little ones. The weather, which was unusually cold for the Seder itself, warmed up and many enjoyed getting a tan. And just about dessert time, a lovely breeze obligingly wafted over us. Looking around, you wouldn’t believe that people have husbands and children on the front lines, and are running to bomb shelters, and aching over still unrescued hostages. What is wonderful about the Jewish people in their land is that they can do both: fight a war on seven fronts, and throw a really good party.
The Gazans are not giving up, they say, rejecting Israel’s latest proposal. They are going to recruit another 30,000 fighters, they say. And there is no chance they will disarm, even though they are relatively scarce and do not threaten Israel. Abu Ali translates the words of a Gazan who explains it to us (thank you Abu Ali):
“Hamas will not give up its weapons even if the entire world burns. Not because it is a weapon it wants to use to fight Israel, nor is it a ‘nuclear weapon’ whose lack cannot be compensated for, but because it is its only means of maintaining its rule, which it took by force of arms and has maintained so far by force of arms.”
“The slogans it spreads that it is willing to give up power are nothing more than a speck of sand in the eyes… Their alternative plan is the Hezbollah model in Lebanon. They wield the power of arms and there is a ‘puppet government’ that takes care of meeting the needs of the residents, whom they subordinate to their own interests through terror and force of arms in the way they want.
“This is an issue, Hamas believes, that the world in its naivety does not know and does not understand.”
Netanyahu, for all his faults, and he has many, has my admiration for sticking to his guns and refusing to back down on Hamas’ total surrender. What he said is true: “If we do not continue the war and complete the destruction of Hamas, then the next October 7 is only a matter of time.’’
Very quietly, thosands of Gazans are leaving to anywhere that will take them, using “medical treatment” as their excuse. Anyone who gets out has a close relative with foreign citizenship willing to make arrangements with the embassy of their country to coordinate with Israel to allow passage through Keren Shalom. Israel is very cooperative, thrilled to see them go to France, Germany, Sweden, Great Britain, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Canada, Netherlands, Russia and Poland (today’s destinations).
I wish all these countries the best of luck with their new arrivals, who are sure to be such an asset (not).
